Workshops are from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm, with a 45 minute break for lunch at noon. Bring your food and eat it here, or there are some excellent eateries in Chestertown, within a few minutes drive.
Materials are included in the price of the workshops. Old clothes are appropriate to wear, and maybe an apron too. The paste paper workshop in particular can get messy (it’s more fun that way) and the pigments we use may not wash out, clothes you don’t care about are good. Paper making can be wet work so waterproof shoes or sneakers are best for your feet.
A $25 deposit is requested at the time of registration. The deposit is refundable up to 5 days before the date of the workshop. The balance is due on the day of the workshop.

INTRODUCTION TO LETTERPRESS PRINTING Learn the basics of the Black Art. We will learn the basics of setting metal type, then print letterheads and short poems on a Vandercook proof press and a table top clam shell press. Along the way we will discuss inking, the properties of various printing papers, and learn a bit about the history of printing.

Using small scale professional equipment we will make sheets of gorgeous cotton rag paper. We will use a heavy weight handmade paper for the cover and an imported mouldmade paper for the pages.
When our books are finished we will use binder's board and Japanese bookcloth to make a hard shell case with an elastic enclosure to protect it.
